New sketch + OHOTMU update

Back from a REALLY cool trip on a bunch of Greek Islands, and all I could think of was stuff I was going to ink and/or color when back home, how Id have completed some layouts I had left unfinished, stuff like that...

anyway, this is smthing Ive had in b/w for a while. Just colored it today. Oh, the 70s... The Gil Kanes, the John Romitas, the Gene Colans, the Mike Ploogs... they dont make comics quite like they used to, do they?

On other news, the second piece I contributed for the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe REDUX project is finally online, and I have to say I remembered it a bit worse... I finished my female ratio contributions, so for the other 3 entries that Im working on expect more testosterone.

See ya here more often, I hope.

Nova vs Titania!

Apparently I went to sleep with the ramblings of my last post still in my mind, coz first thing this morning I felt liek drawing Nova, the classic Buscema version. Fighting a minor, semi-obscure villain(ess) for additional 70sness.

Man, I NEED that Marvel Essential...

Secret Defenders

I have this idea for a Marvel series, Id have the newly-outfitted Doc Strange re-form the Defenders, gathering minor, b-series superheroes for an underground battle against Lovecraftian entities that are secretly preparing their return on Earth. Characters like Hellcat, the classic Nova, a pulp-inspired Ulysses Bloodstone, Thundra and Daimon Hellstrom. Would be cool.

These are just absolutely RANDOM characters I drew while thinking about that idea. Dont know why Black Knight is there though.

That is all.

Goodnight.

Back to sketching, et al.

Been on the beach for a couple of days, hence the radio silence. And friday the proper holiday begins, so I wont be posting stuff until at least the first week of September.

Benn working on some more random sketching, just not to lose the habit, and thumbnailing TWO separate projects, so its not like Ive been slacking off anyway...

anyway, last installment:

More to come, probably sooner than you think.

OHOTMU - Madame Masque

My second entry for the OHOTMU project, organized by the AMAZING Jon Morris with a plethora of other equally astonishing artists.

This one's a bit less obscure than the previous one I chose:

This is the brush on bristol version. The colored one should be up on the OHOTMU website soon hopefully...

Back again.

‎25 mins doodle for today. Not too in love with it, but its the first thing I manage to draw in a bit, so I guess Its gotta have to go..

What else have I been doing? Working on a graphic novel hopefully published next year or so, updating my comic portfolio for a couple of cool conventions after the summer.

OHOTMU character redesign: Asp

Just contributed to a REALLY cool project I felt truly honored to be invited to: The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Redux.

Its basically a TITANIC redesign of EACH and EVERY character entry of the legendary Marvel Comics Official Handbook (the version published in the '80s if Im not mistaken) done by "all-new, all-different" hot artists, to use a Stan Lee-esque jargon.

Of course, as soon as I got invited, I checked the list of the characters still available and pretty much ALL of my favorites were already taken, so I decided to go for a radically different approach: I would have picked the ones I knew ABSOLUTELY nothing about, based only on what potential for redesign they could offer.

First one is Asp:
Apparently, she was an Egyptian-themed Captain America villainess, with electric "stings" or smthing.

Well, now shes a reincarnated Egyptian sorceress with poisonous kiss and a troubled on-again, off-again fling with Boris Karloff. Because thats cooler ;)

Brush and ink on Bristol. Check the colored version here.

Banshee short story

Following my redesigns for Project: Rooftop, I decided to make a short story (5 pages) to beef up my portfolio starring the whole Cassidy family in their new outfits. And Wolverine. 'Coz theres never enough Wolverine.

Resolved to go for a MUCH tighter approach to pencils than usual. Pretty happy with most of the panels.

For now.

Pencils only this time, I'll try to ink them as soon as Im not doing other stuff.

Punisher inks

I posted already some progress pages from this short story I did some time ago, and I thought I might as well put all the inked pages.

The original short story was 6 pages, but I selected 4 of them for inks, essentially for time-related issues.

Brush and dip pen on Bristol.

Look what Ive found...

Old page (about a year ago or so) form a 5-pages sampler I did for a 2000AD competition.

Looking back at it,  I think my anatomy and facial expressions are better right now, but Im still quite happy with most of the camera angles on it.

I thought I might share ;)

Project: Rooftop costume redesign: BLACK TOM

The ever-so-cool and criminally underrated Black Tom, done for Project : Rooftop

If Banshee is the King Arthur of my story, his cousin is our Merlin. His powers always had an Earth-based nature that to me linked him perfectly to Celtic spirituality, and that is exactly what I tried to reflect in his costume: part Druid, part hermit, part hobo, since his newfound mysticism leaves little or no interest in his wardrobe. The idea is that he probably once had a superhero outfit but stopped caring and now wears a monk-like robe plus whatever he can find over it. He always carries around an Irish Shillelagh, a fighting stick, and wears on his chest the Celtic rune for the Earth.
